Strategy

I believe that thinking about strategy can help your business. Building a strategy helped me and the principals I used can readily be used for your business.

When we moved in 2007, we prepared by creating a strategy. We thought about what the goals of the move would be. We also thought about what would be needed to make sure to achieve those goals. Even the small things, like making sure the children would be able to make new friends. New friends would relate the children to their new home, and thus curb home sickness. Since it was a long distance move, it was not certain we would achieve those goals. One by one we started achieving the goals. The children made friends. At all times we could keep eye on the finances and understand how we were doing. Unfortunately, right at the moment we moved the economy went down. We have not achieved all our goals yet. However, we still have the same goals and we know we are making the move a success even though it takes a few years longer than first expected.

Your business plan was your initial strategy, but now you need more. You start your business with a business plan. Your business plan outlines a general strategy. The business plan tells bankers and investors how you intend to earn your money and what customers. You write a business plan to collect the start-up money and you use it later in discussions with bankers. You write a plan along guidelines that improve your chances of collecting the money. Apparently it worked, you are in business.

Because there is more to doing business than you wrote in your business plan, you need a strategy to stay in control. Start-up money is one thing, but running a business from day to day is another. In your business a lot more goes on than what is outlined in the business plan. For some of the simplest questions your employees have to come to you; can you buy new computers? You have to decide what your employees do; if you buy those new computers how will that improve their work? Every day you see a new prospect you wonder if this prospect will be your dream customer and will reduce the strain the other customers are putting on you. That wasn't in the business plan! However, that kind of question can be addressed with a strategy. Knowing your strategy allows you to make decisions on the spot that will bring you closer to achieving your goals.

A good strategy will be about more than your business, it will include personal goals. Still dreaming of that boat? The vintage car? The promise you made when you married? Pension in paradise? You started your own business to achieve those goals. Your business may be doing well, and the banks may be happy, but has the success of your business spilled over to your private life the way you wanted? You still have to deliver on those 'other' goals. The goals that are actually more important to you. By careful thinking and putting thoughts and ideas to paper, you can get back in control of achieving your goals. It is never too early to focus on your goals.

Strategy has helped me to focus on what is important to me, my wife and children. Strategy made me focus on making sure our children had opportunities to meet new friends. Strategy can help you. A strategy is for your business and for you. Try a trusted writer now to document your strategy and start achieving your goals immediately.
